    Get PDF
In this paper we present an energy-efficient cross layer protocol for providing application specific reservations in wireless senor networks called the “Unified Clustering and Communication Protocol ” (UCCP). Our modular cross layered framework satisfies three wireless sensor network requirements, namely, the QoS requirement of heterogeneous applications, energy aware clustering and data forwarding by relay sensor nodes. Our unified design approach is motivated by providing an integrated and viable solution for self organization and end-to-end communication is wireless sensor networks. Dynamic QoS based reservation guarantees are provided using a reservation-based TDMA approach. Our novel energy-efficient clustering approach employs a multi-objective optimization technique based on OR (operations research) practices. We adopt a simple hierarchy in which relay nodes forward data messages from cluster head to the sink, thus eliminating the overheads needed to maintain a routing protocol. Simulation results demonstrate that UCCP provides an energy-efficient and scalable solution to meet the application specific QoS demands in resource constrained sensor nodes. The recent research in Body Area Networks (BAN) is focused on making its communication more reliable, energy efficient, secure, and to better utilize system resources. In this paper we propose a novel BAN network architecture for indoor hospital environments, and a new mechanism of peer discovery with routing table construction that helps to reduce network traffic load, energy consumption, and improves BAN reliability. We have performed extensive simulations in the Castalia simulation environment to show that our proposed protocol has better performance in terms of reduced BAN traffic load, increased number of successful packets received by nodes, reduced number of packets forwarded by intermediate nodes, and overall lower energy consumption compared to other protocols

The present-day industries incorporate many applications, and complex processes, hence, a large number of sensors with dissimilar process deadlines and sensor update frequencies will be in place. This paper presents a scheduling algorithm, which takes into account the varying deadlines of the sensors connected to the cluster-head, and formulates a static schedule for Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) based communication. The scheme uses IEEE802.15.4e superframe as a baseline and proposes a new superframe structure. For evaluation purposes the update frequencies of different industrial processes are considered. The scheduling algorithm is evaluated under varying network loads by increasing the number of nodes affiliated to a cluster-head. The static schedule generated by the scheduling algorithm offers reduced energy consumption, improved reliability, efficient network load management and improved information to control bits ratio

Research efforts in the area of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are heavily dependent on the development and evaluations of protocols through simulations. Therefore, realistic simulations are vital for the development of viable protocols. However, most the research efforts that depend on simulations tend to use non-realistic parameters and assumptions. Such examples include use of infinite transmit power levels and no consideration of radio propagation loss and irregularities. These assumptions are common among many clustering protocols which lead to incorrect estimation of performance metrics such as network lifetime, energy consumed per bit, and connectivity. In this paper we modify clustering protocols by incorporating a model compliant with Crossbow MICAz motes. The energy consumption model takes into account the discrete transmit power levels of the CC2420 radio ship used by MICAz sensor nodes. The radio propagation path loss is modeled by using the Lognormal Shadowing Model. We evaluate a number of clustering protocols including LEACH, HEED, EECS and MOECS. We also present results that demonstrate how realistic assumptions can effect the system behavior in comparison with the results obtained by assuming ideal conditions

This paper presents an analysis and measurement results for an experimental study on throughput, range and efficiency performance of IEEE 802.11a, 802.11n and 802.11ac standards in an indoor environment on a typical University Campus. The investigation considers a number of key system features including PHY layers mainly, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO), Channel Bonding and Short-Guard Interval (SGI) in the heterogeneous wireless network. The experiment is carried out for the IEEE 802.11ac standard along with the legacy protocols 802.11a/n in a heterogeneous environment which is typically deployed on Campus. The results compare the maximum throughput of IEEE 802.11 standard amendments, in terms of theoretical and experimental throughput over TCP and UDP protocols for different set of parameters and features to check their efficiency and range. To achieve this desired goal, different tests are proposed. The result of these tests will help to determine the capability of each protocol and their efficiency in a practical heterogeneous on-campus environment

Phishing attacks has been growing rapidly in the past few years. As a result, a number of approaches have been proposed to address the problem. Despite various approaches proposed such as feature-based and blacklist-based via machine learning techniques, there is still a lack of accuracy and real-time solution. Most approaches applying machine learning techniques requires that parameters are tuned to solve a problem, but parameters are difficult to tune to a desirable output. This study presents a parameter tuning framework, using adaptive Neuron-fuzzy inference system with comprehensive data to maximize systems performance. Extensive experiment was conducted. During ten-fold cross-validation, the data is split into training and testing pairs and parameters are set according to desirable output and have achieved 98.74% accuracy. Our results demonstrated higher performance compared to other results in the field. This paper contributes new comprehensive data, novel parameter tuning method and applied a new algorithm in a new field. The implication is that adaptive neuron-fuzzy system with effective data and proper parameter tuning can enhance system performance. The outcome will provide a new knowledge in the field

Autonomous driving technology offers a promising solution to reduce road accidents, traffic congestion, and fuel consumption. The management of vehicular networks is challenging as it demands mobility, location awareness, high reliability and low latency of data traffic. In this paper, we propose a novel communication architecture for vehicular network with 5G Mobile Networks and SDN technologies to support multiple core networks for autonomous vehicles and to tackle the potential challenges raised by the autonomous driving vehicles. Data requirements are evaluated for vehicular networks with respect to number of lanes and cluster size, to efficiently use the frequency and bandwidth. Also, the network latency requirements are analysed, which are mandatory constraints for all the applications where real time end-to-end communication is necessary. A test environment is also formulated to evaluate improvement in vehicular network using SDN-based approach over traditional core networks

Organizational commitment is an important factor because the extent to which employees feel attached and committed to their organizations, will lead to higher productivity and lower turnover. Committed employees are also more focused on their respective tasks. The study is based on the service sector and private NGOs were surveyed, from where 280 responses were collected as part of the survey. The dimensions through which participative management was measured were employee priorities, managerial attitude and training consistency. The study found that there was a moderate positive relationship between all the dimensions of participative management and organizational commitment. The study also found that employee involvement mediated the relationship of participative management with organizational commitment. The mediating effect of Employee Involvement was proven with the help of step wise regression analysis and Sobel test. This study can contribute to managerial sector as it clearly shows that employee involvement is  necessary for organizational commitment to fully perpetuate in organization. If organizations involve employees at different levels, it will lead to a more concerned approach towards organization and will ultimately generate organizational commitmen

A novel MAC proposal for critical and emergency communications in industrial wireless sensor networks

    Get PDF
In this paper, three MAC protocols, EE-MAC, CF-MAC and OD-MAC, are proposed. EE-MAC incorporates emergency communication and allows immediate channel access for emergency traffic. CF-MAC compensates regulatory and open-loop control traffic and introduces a prioritized access for high priority nodes. It also allows nodes with critical data to reserve communication slots using control channel. Whereas OD-MAC presents a deadline based dynamic scheduler which ensures timely delivery of time-critical information. The paper presents mathematical modelling of the proposed protocols. For evaluation purposes, the performance of the proposed protocols is compared to IEEE 802.15.4e LLDN. The results show that the proposed protocols offer up to 92% reduction in delay in emergency communications at the cost of 5% to 15% increase in delay of time-insensitive data. A 60% and 85% reduction was observed in the channel access delay for regulatory and open-loop control traffic respectively along with notable improvements in communications reliability
